Fernando Sosa is a renowned Uruguayan-born salsa dancer, choreographer, and artistic director based in Milan, Italy. Born on May 19, 1977, in Montevideo, Uruguay, he initially pursued a career in football before relocating to Italy in 1993. There, he encountered Cuban master Alberto Valdés, who introduced him to Afro-Cuban dance, marking the beginning of his dance journey .


Career Highlights

  • Tropical Gem Dance Company: In 2000, Sosa co-founded the Tropical Gem Dance Company with Rafael González. The company debuted at the World Salsa Congress in Milan, showcasing an innovative style characterized by strength, precision, and attention to detail. Tropical Gem has since performed at major salsa festivals and congresses worldwide .

  • Sosa Academy: In 2008, Sosa and his partner Tito Petronio established the Sosa Academy Dance School in Milan. The academy offers training in Caribbean dance and other disciplines, attracting students from around the globe .

  • Salsanama Competition: Sosa created the Salsanama competition, a unique one-on-one salsa battle format where dancers improvise to random music selections. The event has become a staple at salsa congresses worldwide .​

  • Film and Television Appearances: Sosa has been involved in various creative projects, including the film The Latin Dream, where he starred as a salsa dance competitor. He has also appeared on Italian television programs such as Big Brother, Top of the Pops, and Festival di Sanremo .
